ABSTRACT
Motion sickness issues are expected to arise in future cars. The evaluation method for motion sickness is divided into subjective and objective assessments. One of the most popular methods to evaluate motion sickness in vehicle is motion sickness dose value (MSDV) stated in ISO 2631-1. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the motion sickness characteristics of passengers riding in a vehicle according to the specifications of the damper, part of the suspension of the vehicle. A 2.1-ton minivan was selected as the test subject and a semi-active suspension with MR damper was installed in the vehicle to set up a test environment. The driving test was conducted based on speed bumps and measured signals were analyzed. The rms values of raw signals about vertical acceleration and pitch angular acceleration were significantly different according to damping force levels, and in the view of MSDV, the differences of values reduced almost a half. As the results, we discussed the limitations of current quantitative indicators for motion sickness on three aspects and dealt with the background of quantitative indicators and reviewed related references in detail. Finally, we concluded that the reassessment of the indicators would be anticipated in vehicle perspective, not ship perspective.
