ABSTRACT
The coexistence of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) and human-driven vehicles (HVs) on urban roads will persist for a long time. Therefore, managing mixed traffic flow, leveraging the advantage of CAVs, and improving intersection capacity have become urgent problems. In this study, a mixed traffic control method that considers a CAV-dedicated phase is proposed to maximize the throughput and capacity of intersections. First, the impact of conflict points on CAV-dedicated phase capacity is analyzed. On this basis, constraints on the capacity of individual conflict points are constructed according to the relationship between passage time and platoon size. The impact of multiple conflict points on CAV-dedicated phase capacity is further analyzed, and constraints based on fleet size, vehicle speed, and conflict point spacing are established. In addition, the phase duration constraints are developed for fixed phase sequences, and the traffic distribution constraint is established according to the traffic capacity. Finally, numerical experiments are carried out using a typical isolated intersection as an example. The results show that the proposed control strategy could significantly improve the capacity and throughput of the intersection compared to the model with only dedicated lanes.
